“There are peaches and plums to make the mouth water, melons and greengages, all set down carefully in classical drawing as though the artist was copying the frescoes of Pompeii” (Great Flower Books, p. 12).

“It is the primary object of the present work to excite in gentlemen themselves, a predominant turn and ardour for horticultural pursuits; so that by acquiring sound and practical knowledge upon this elegant, entertaining, and highly important subject, they may in every instance be able to judge for themselves, and to direct and superintend their own gardeners or labourers, instead of being, as they too generally are, the sport of their ignorant pretensions” (Preface).
