The First Edition in English of "Ethics"
SPINOZA, Benedict de. WILLIS, Robert. Benedict de Spinoza; His Life, Correspondence, and Ethics. London: Trubner & Co , 1870.
First English edition of "Ethics." Octavo (8 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches; 219 x 140 mm). iii-xliv, 647, [1, colophon] pp. Lacking leaf (i-ii), probably a blank. We could find no copies of this at auction in the past 50 years and only about 5 copies in OCLC.

Publisher's original brown pebbled cloth. Boards ruled in blind. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Pale yellow endpapers. Head and tail of the spine a bit bumped and chipped. A 1.5-inch neat repair to closed tear on back outer hinge. Some rubbing to board edges. Previous owner's small neat signature on title-page. Text is very clean. Overall a very good copy.

Present edition "Includes the first published English translation of Ethics, pp414-647, as well as the author's translation of the correspondence, pp. 216-413." (Boucher, 20).

Between November 1854 and February 1856 author George Eliot completed an English translation of Ethics "However, because she was not able to arrange a suitable financial arrangement with Henry Bohn, the publisher of Bohn's Philosophical Library, her translation was not published...[until very recently]" (Spinoza In English, A Bibliography. By Wayne Boucher, 19)
