First edition, first issue: i.e., "Stave I," green-coated endpapers, blue half-title, red and blue title. Foolscap octavo (6 7/16 x 4 1/8 inches; 163 x 104 mm). [i-viii], [1]2-166, [2, ads]. Four hand-colored steel-engraved plates by and after Leech and four wood-engraved text illustrations by W.J. Linton after Leech.

Original cinnamon vertically-ribbed cloth. Covers decoratively stamped in blind, and front cover and spine decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt. Binding matches Todd's first impression, first state, with smallest interval between blind-stamping and gilt equal to 15 mm. and with perfect "D" in "Dickens." Covers slightly soiled and with two small ink spots to front cover. Some wrinkling to cloth. Minimal wear to head and tail of spine. Inner hinges starting but holding firm. Some occasional minor soiling to leaves. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. A very good copy. Housed in a quarter morocco clamshell case.
