A Magic Blow Books
MAGIC AND CONJURING. Ein Zauber-Bilderbuch [Magical Blow Book/Magic Picture Book]. Germany , 1890.
Small twelvemo (5 1/2 x 3 11/16 inches; 140 x 94 mm). Bound in the scarce original pictorial wrappers, showing a medieval magician holding a blow-book with the loose pages surrounding him. Spine reinforced. 28 leaves, containing 49 illustrated pages. The illustrations include silhouettes, fairy tales, musical scores, chromolithograph animals, caricatures and the alphabet in different fonts. Some minor chipping and creasing to wrappers. With some internal professional repairs to inside of front and back wraps. Illustrated leaves are about fine. Overall a very good copy.

This type of trick is considered the oldest example of a "manufactured prop" to be used for magic.

From the inside of the wrappers: “You take the back if the book with your left hand and at the front where you see by closer inspection the divisions cut in the leaves, you take hold of one division at a time with thumb and first finger of the right hand then you turn over the pages in a somehow quick manner. When putting your thumb and first finger to the next division you find on reopening the book to the grand astonishment of the spectator the pictures either to have vanished or to be transformed into some others, and this wonderful trick can be continued several times always showing different illustrations.”
